Freight operations between Seaside (mp123.3) to Lake Majella (mp130.0) ceased in 1978 and the section abandoned 1980.

Seaside to near Bardin (mp116.5) placed out of service by UP on 7/13/97.

Bardin to Castroville (mp110.4) was pulled out of service when the mainline switch was pulled in 1999.

Fort Ord saw their last train in 1992 with the movement of the 7th Light Infantry to Ft. Lweis, WA. The last train from the sand plant at Lapis was around mid-1994. SP/UP freight operations ceased in 1997. By this time the Monterey Branch was listed in UP ETTs as the Seaside Industrial Lead.
