I find it rather fascinating that this discussion is taking place here. Some 49 years after the event, the Granite accident continues to be a subject of interest, mystery, wonder. This makes me think that perhaps all those years of working on this weren't exactly wasted but might have some lasting effect.

It is interesting to see the rather weak investigative skills and proceedings of the ICC in those years. They were very good at telling us what the equipment was like, what it did, and especially where it ended up. But they told us little or nothing about the most important factor of all: the HUMAN factor. Very little about the two enginemen was included in the report, an astonishing ommission in my view.

The official ICC Accident Report's formal statement of cause goes down as one of the world's all-time most useless sentences ever penned: "This accident was caused by excessive speed on a curve." That's it.

Seriously, they had all the pieces of the puzzle right there before them to solve this thing. All they had to do was to think forensically, logically, and try to put them all together through a process of inductive and deductive reasoning. It is quite surprising that they never did this. Clearly, in 1962 the importance of the human factor was just not fully appreciated or even recognized.
