I know a two North Carolina-based Amtrak special agents through
my involvement in Operation Lifesaver. Both have been helpful
at special events. Both participate in OL safety campaigns.

One of these is classified as a detective and works mostly in in
civilian clothes. You probably would not reccognize him aboard
a train unless he chose to identify himself.

Yes, people do commit crimes aboard trains, including transport
of drugs. As others have pointed out, there are hug juristictional
issues when trains pass through several states and part of the
work of the Amtrak police is to coordinate among various law
enforcement agencies, when necessary.


I have traveled by Amtrak within North Carolina three times so far
this year. The trains were basically on-time and clean and the
crews were courteous.
