There are actually quite a few steamships left on the lakes. I was stationed on a Coast Guard Icebreaker out of Sturgeon Bay, WI and one of our major jobs was breaking ice so the lakers could get in and out of Bayship shipyard for winter layup. I also was a tour guide for the Door County Maritime Museum on the SS Edward L. Ryerson when she was laid up for an extended period. She, like all of the steam powered lakers, was fueled with oil. She has since been put back in service and is one of the few, if not the only, "straight-deckers" in service, meaning it isn't equipped with a self-unloading apparatus.
