Three years, one in South Korea.

Started out as a PVT left as an SP5.

In a way, this is true; but, unless you were in a different military than I was, your career path, despite all your hard work and determination, was ultimately determined by a clerk who needed to fill a spot.

You DID serve in a military other than the one I served in! I swear, "high expectations"? "Work ethic"? There were none of this anywhere I served, absolutely none, from the time servers to the career people. We had a POL dump in S. Korea that never had fuel. Work ethic when you can't fuel your truck? One of my company commanders whined because the back window of his Saab cracked!, that was his worry, not the company.

During my 3 years, the only things that mattered to my fellow soldiers were booze, B girls and who got the clap.

Yep, big honking demand for cannon cockers, and gun bunnies.

GI Bill, college degree and a 40+ year career.
Frankly, brother, I compare your essay to my experiences and observations of military operation gained over 3 years of service and I am lead to believe that either you weren't in the Army (maybe you were "lucky" and got into the Air Force), or that you based your essay on an Army "Be all you can be" commercial. Your essay sure doesn't reflect reality!
