I left railroad operating department employment in early 1969 but there were serious concerns then with both gunfire aimed at moving trains as well as large objects placed to injure (or worse) crew members.
We had occasional incidents of shooting at our trains and certain East Bay areas come to mind. And although I didn't see it personally, I was told at the time that someone hung a large rock right at F-unit windshield height at the east end of WPRR Tunnel number 1 where it was struck by a train exiting the tunnel. It luckily didn't kill a crew member.
Having rocks thrown at us was fairly routine. The WPRR bay window cabooses had wire screening in both directions on the portions of the windows that faced forward when moving in that direction. So the senseless vandalism is not something new, though given the state of our society these days, it may be worse than when I was working there.
