Back in the late sixties, they used to frequently take potshots at sailors as they departed Hunters Point Naval Shipyard (SF), out the back gate (Palou Av. I think).
I got three bullet holes in my right rear fender to prove it! Never heard a thing, but a few minutes later I was pulled over by the military police, and taken into custody as a material witness. I was of no help of course - didn't even know it happened until they told me. They did see it though - how I don't understand. I was told to not go out that way anymore.
There arose a big stink about it eventually, because it went on sporadically for months; while the city cops often would not even respond. As I recall though, it finally came to a head when they started shooting at the marines in their guard shack, and kept on shooting. Those marines took it upon themselves to go after the shooters, roaming the neighborhood in full platoons until they took 'em.
Of course, that caused a whole 'nother big stink! The military going after citizens ya know. But the shooting stopped! Turns out there were three brothers and their friends that would regularly get drunk and thought it great sport to shoot at moving vehicles from their porch on the hillside; but eventually tired of that and went on to bigger game - occupied guard shacks!
Far as I know, they never hit anybody - just vehicles and that guard shack, and who know what else.
