As a veteran of many, MANY encounters with police, going back to the late 80s, my reaction was always dictated by the officer's.
If they were polite, even if wary or on guard, I was always polite and helpful.
If their first reaction was to treat me with disrespect or be threatening and bullying, then they got stonewalled and I asserted my rights to the fullest. One cop, who decided with no provocation to smack my passenger in the head and throw him to the ground while laughing about it, earned us filing a complaint against him.
I get they have a stressful, dangerous job, and incidents like the one above are certainly scary, but if an officer begins treating everyone they meet as a full-out threat, then in the end it undermines they job they have to do. When people are scared or cornered, they act out, even if innocent.
I hope they catch the dirtbag who shot at the MRL crew. I recall hearing about a sniper in the Feather River Canyon in the 90s, IIRC. Had the crews scared. I have heard many stories over the years of people shooting at or throwing rocks at trains and crews, going back decades. Nothing new, just sad.
