I think that the most important thing to remember regarding Amtrak (in addition to the fact that all or almost all forms of transportation for people, as opposed to freight, are subsidized) is this:

Amtrak exists only because the private railroads were losing their collective butts on passenger trains and virtually none of them wished to be in the passenger business, especially intercity trains. End of story.

Do the various politicians who want to kill Amtrak have even the tinest understanding of history? Do they really think that if Amtrak goes away, some moneybags entrepreneur is going to step up and run passenger trains for the good of the country? Do they care? The answers to the above are "No", "Of course not", and "No".
