DM&IR and IIRC Santa Fe's York Canyon Coal train use/used automatic retainers. The engines and cars have to be equipped with an additional brake line.
Westside had straight train air, which had a straight air pipe the length of the train, a second straight air valve in the locomotive just for this pipe, and filling pieces with a double check valves between the triple valves and brake cylinders on each car. This sort of set-up was found only in captive service. Some of the first models of triple valves had a selector cock for straight or train air, but those went away very early.
