SP 5103's lesson in retainers was very informative and to the point! Retainers are so little used nowdays that I had no idea how they really worked other than to "retain" air in the brake system on steep grades.
OPR has a short (1/4 mile) 6% grade into our industrial park on which loads are generally downhill but with 26 air controlling a train is much easier than with the old 6BL on our SW's which we still use on occasion. Our ex-SP SW-8 1127 (undergoing restoration), which has dynamic brakes, was very well liked for this run as the dynamics were very effective in maintaining speed and will be assigned back to this job once restoration is complete.
Now and then some trespasser will turn the handle on one of the retainers and the drag sends us back to look for a missed a handbrake which turns out to be the retainer.
