One more I have to mention is a 1919 map of the city with intricate detail of streets, trolley lines, rail lines, etc. Be forewarned, it is 128MB!
128 MB file of 1919 City of Portland Map
All of the above came from
City Of Portland Archives operated by the city and looks as if are all public domain. These same images show up in historic books of the city found everywhere.
If you are up to it, there are thousands of photos there on the site. I think I have downloaded about 2000 of them. If you are serious, here is a few tricks I used to get them. Search by single words. Use "Railroad", "Train", "Yard", "Aerial", Railroad names and abbreviations, or any street name works great.
First, when you get to the page change the "Sort By" to Record type. This will put all the photos together in one group, easier to scroll and click through.
Second, if there is a lot of results for the search word you have entered, change the address on the browser to match the result number (i.e. ....._recordType&count&rows=1300). Searching a max of 200 results at a time will drive you crazy.
Third, most of the photo files may not be available to download, the ones that are have an icon of a sheet of paper with a magnifying glass over it. These photos begin about 3/4 of the way down past all the boring paperwork of meetings, receipts, etc... Here is an example of what to look for.
See the two icons? You want to click on the left one.
Fourth, a lot of the photos are in .PDF format which sucks, but you can click on the photo in the PDF reader, copy and paste it in your favorite photo viewer. Some of the PDF files are VERY high resolution! If you are good enough with a computer and scripting you can write a script to convert them automatically.
After playing with the site you should become used to its funny ways.
Have fun!
