What is it with big rigs hitting the side of trains? The story doesn't say whether there were crossing gates, but if it was within the city limits, surely there were. Is the truck driver so zoned out he doesn't see this? Does he not grasp that the train is going to arrive at the crossing before he can get clear of it?
