In case of a collision, gauntlet track can be deadly because the trains do not meet head-on. One train runs along and through the side of the other train.

Many people were killed when two Chicago South Shore trains met head-on on gauntlet track over a bridge. I believe the Long Island had a similar accident.

The advantage of Gauntlet track is that it avoids the maintenance expense and speed restrictions of switches on both ends.
