There are two types of gauntlet track.

The first provides an offset of the same track - either to clear a platform or to avoid the live rails of a scale.

The second type combines two tracks to enable them to temporarily share the space of one track without actually connecting the two tracks. This is commonly found where two tracks have to cross a single track bridge and once clear go back to two separate tracks.

I have also seen gauntlet track used where the points of a switch are on one side of a small bridge, and the frog is on the other.
