Gauntlet vs. Gantlet

Thinking that "gauntlet" referred to glove and "gantlet" to track arrangement discussed here (and two lines of people as in "Run the gantlet") I did some research. In the end both spellings are correct for either meaning and in fact "gauntlet" seems to be used more than "gantlet" lately. It does appear that early Swedish and French origins and Old English indicate that "gauntlet" did refer to glove and "gantlet" to two lines but the old spellings are too odd to say for sure. ("gantelet", "gantlope", "gatlopp" and "gantelope")
