I know EUKA had 4 exPRSL/Conrail GP38s #30-32, plus GP7 xRDG/CCT #70 (still there but derelict). The #70 was a lightweight unit (very small fuel tank) and used on the Annie and Mary (Arcata and Mad River). I think the A&MR GE 44 tons might have belonged to EUKA, but they apparently never used them and sold them off (though one came back to a local museum). They also leased xSP 1100 SW8 early on (now at Portola). I'm not sure if they ever leased anything bigger than an SD9 from SP. THe 38s went to DM&E and NCR/NWP got SD9s and maybe some GP9s.

It was hard enough keeping those 38s on top of the rail, and the 70 on the Annie and Mary required a prayer each trip, not to mention repairs to the trestles on a regular basis. I can't imagine an SD45 going up the Carlotta branch. The railroad went from that, to the EUKA/NCR/NWP, to how long since a train? I was amazed at how few mills are left last time I was there. A friend of mine scraped the machinery out of the flakeboard plant - they used to be good for 3-5 loads almost every night. The end of track at Blue Lake plus another mill, Costa Trucking (transload), Emmerson, Bracut and the cement transfer were all regular customers almost every night north of Eureka circa 1990.

I seem to recall only seeing SP SD9s laying over at Willits.
