Swedish chime? I would expect an Leslie Supertyphon S5. The head on picture looks like a Nathan Airchime P5 - maybe a 0 or 4a bell?

Agreed. I hated the 30 and 31. Tolerable if you were the conductor, totally miserable if 3 were in the cab. Someone would have to stand in between the control stand and electrical cabinet, or worse in a folding chair sideways wedged in the same space. You couldn't see anything either way.
The little time I was there, had one of them turn into Mt. Vesuvius one evening just as we exited a tunnel. Another time I looked back to see water pouting out of our radiator. We limped into Dos Rios, borrowed a hose, and filled it to the top. Then ran light engine to Willits. Was supposed to have the next day (Sunday?) off and had a free ticket to ride behind Cal Western 45 out of Willits - they had just got it going again. Instead, deadheaded to Scotia for another 38, light engine to Dos Rios, then triple runaround with only one person on the ground and finally get to Willits.
If I recall, the 38s could handle 20-21 cars from Scotia to Willits. Seemed to have a single unit as much as two. Usually one 38 stayed back for repair or the rock train, with 70 working Eureka north. Crew worked out of Willits and another out of Scotia trading trains at Island Mountain six days a week. Same crews took the passenger train if it was running, but the empties came north on Sunday instead of Saturday. Scotia and Arcata locals worked nights meeting at Eureka to trade cars. Extra board covered a day trip to Blue Lake if they were out of cars and the rock train. I recall the locals did something different sometimes where one or the other would work one direction Scotia to Blue Lake-Korblex.
