stash -- and others --
NO passenger train anywhere ever makes a true profit,
if one considers ALL the true costs of operating it.
They all get subsidies of some sort or another -- the
subsidy just may be more cleverly hidden in some
places/countries than in others.
(And what on earth is wrong with investing in human needs?
Transportation is one of the main reasons to even have a
federal government in the first place. How many roads make
a profit? Or airlines?).
I hope the NWP manages to hang on. Rail transportation is
much better for the environment than is trucking -- and shipping
stuff by rail makes it less necessary to have all those huge
trucks on the roads (sorry, George Andrews!), which will make
for much less traffic. That is a good thing.
