How Plausible that He Just Made Mistake?

Could he have just thought he was past the curve by accident and accelerated to the wrong track speed?

How easy is it to tell where you are at night?

Could he have been looking out window at something and missed a sign letting him know to slow down and then for some reason figured it was time to speed up, thinking he had gone through curve already during time he was looking out window?
