Forgot. The tunnel between Sausalito and Larkspur was only 2,194 feet but was single track. And yes, it was called the Alto Tunnel.
For some reason, I always thought that the Alto Tunnel was the double track one just south of San Rafael.
In the end, all that went through the Alto Tunnel was that old SW-1 and it had to be at walking speed. Anything more and you start scraping the tunnel walls the track was so rough and the tunnel falls were in bad condition.
The narrow gauge, did go to San Rafael via San Anselmo and on to San Quentin Point.
Sorry about the bum dope on the first post. Tunnel 3 was at Greenbrae and it was concrete lined, double track and was 1,104.6 feet long bored in 1884.
I go to lunch once and a while and forget where I have been.
