Since the citation sourcing seems weak, and the cost seems suspiciously high, I wouldn't be surprised if that cost number came from one of modern journalism's newest sources, the crack between the writers butt cheeks.....?
That aside, bikes account for about 2% of all trips, but only represent less than half a percent of total public and private (mostly private for the bikes themselves in this case) surface transportation expenditures.
Transit and rail passenger services account for about 4% of total public and private costs (about 50% public, because typically we don't buy our own train or bus) of the surface transportation budget, and accounts for about 4% of trips.....
So in the game of who gets what in taxes paid or mandated transportation expenditures from the evil "gubmint", the 1% of public transportation expenditures spent on bikes is actually kind of a bargain.
Your car requires approximately 12-15 parking spaces per vehicle (some estimates even higher), at an estimated fully allocated cost of around $12,000 per space. Most of that parking is required by zoning/building codes, and is passed on to you in the price of rents and goods, even if you walk to the store. Just that evil "gubmint" mandated "free" parking subsidy requirement dwarfs public road expenditures. By contrast, a bike locker costs about $500 dollars.
But, who needs stupid facts?
Because naturally, like those evil awful trains, those elitist bikes must be evil too.....?
