As far as old timbers. There were a lot around and still are. The hard part is getting them out from where they were dumped. When they were putting in steel bents in Tunnel 11 on Cuesta, they loaded the old timbers up into a gon and they went north to the Siskiyous. The tunnels there were small, plate "C" cars only. They would cut off the bottoms to get rid of any rotten wood and they would fit just fine.
Where you will find old timbers is near the mouth of old tunnels. They were tossed over the edge where they rolled down the sides of the RofW. You can still see places on Cuesta, Tunnels 6-7-8-9 & 11. Take Tunnel 14 above Ashland. There is no way in by any road, only rail. My guess is that if you received permission, ? ? , you would have to use a logging copter to get them out. They were all Redwood back then.
