1) Read the charges against the NCRA. Read the history of their
release of toxins into the Eel River and environment. (They did
sign a consent decree). Their history is awful. They are the ONLY
public agency in the state classified as "high risk" by the CTC.
2) Where did the rumor that rail opponents are funded by the highway
lobby start? Like many claims by rail proponents, it is completely
made up and has no substance. NCRA has a long history of being opposed
by legitimate environmental organizations. SMART was opposed by Marin
Conservation League, Marin Audubon Society, and others. None of these
are funded with highway money.
3) Whereas look at who's backing SMART. The name list of large
donors stems largely the developer/special interests of Sonoma County.
(Local nonprofits have no more money to support SMART than local
nonprofits have to defeat it.)
I think the question everyone should be asking is what happened
to the Sonoma environmental community? Why are they cozying up to
the developers of Sonoma? How have they allowed themselves to become
completely co-opted by the biggest local taxpayer financed boondoggle
in the history of the region?
