Dr. Z. excellent commentary. My only comment is that I still don't get where I'm disagreeing with you. I actually agree with everything you've said, except for where you seem to be saying I am disagreeing with you!
As to the USGS map I see what you're saying but it actually is correctly drawn. The track that connects to the Santa Fe wye and runs behind the Santa Fe freight depot did exist. The track to the south of that is a single track running into the Key underpass of the SP. In the 1965 aerial photo you can see this track in the underpass.
I don't see any connection between this OTR/Key track and the Santa Fe on the map. So map seems to be correct but let me know in I misunderstood you.
