Here's what happened.
After SP removed from service the portion of the Work Lead embedded in old First Street and continuing all the way to east of the Oak Street crossing, yard movements between the Homestead and Hanlon's or the west end of the 10 Zone Lead had to use the Eastbound Main Track between the interlocking at Magnolia and the facing point hand-thrown crossover from the main to the Work Lead that was just east of the Lake Merritt inlet. Afterwards, that small portion of the Work Lead was re-designated as an extension of Hanlon's. The remaining, in-service portion west of JL Square was always still called the Work Lead.
