Very interesting, Gary, that the 2 major threads in your comments are that (1) safety is too expensive, and (2) “fools” and those with a low IQ (as you would define it) deserve whatever they get.
Well, as to the cost of safety improvements, it is obvious that it makes no sense to ask you what you think a life is worth (even that of a fool or a drunk student), because you make it clear that the answer would be “not much”.
But let me point out that the cry of “It will cost too much!” has greeted EVERY safety and labor-protecting mandate since the beginning of time. Why spend money on ANY crossing signals, for example? If everyone was smart enough to follow the admonitions on the old cross-bucks – “Stop-Look-Listen” – there would be no crossing accidents. We need have no pity for the fools who don’t do so. And all the money the poor RRs could save!
As to Darwin, I would hope that the humane qualities of pity, compassion, and a concern for ALL human life (even that of a fool or a drunk student), might be as important to future generations as “an IQ above room temperature”.
And I sincerely hope that no friend or relative of yours EVER does something so stupid at school or on the road as to cause injury or death to themselves or others. You, then, might just find yourself being tempted to pity the fool.
