It isn't just railroad history. Carl and I just got back from our bi-weekly stint as docents at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas. For the past 26 years, long before the center opened in 1998, there has been a "Steinbeck Festival" every August. For the past 6 years, the attendance had been declining, and quite dramatically. All of the die hards from the old days are dying off, no longer driving, have ailments, and all of the younger kids don't read much of anything and could care less who Steinbeck is---"oh, yeah, I read the Red Pony when I was in junior high". So maybe we should switch it to a film festival at the nearby multiple cinema complex. At any rate, it isn't just railroad history.
