I am very sorry to hear this.
Unlike many of you above, I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Steinheimer, although I have long admired his work in many a book and magazine.
A couple of years ago, I was busy assembling a book about the SP's Sacramento shops, and looked up some of Mr. Steinheimer's photos in the collection of the DeGolyer Library at SMU. They told me I'd need Shirley Burman's permission to publish them. The CSRM (where I'm a docent) put me in touch.
A more gracious and welcoming person I've never met. Shirley Burman not only let me use the photos, she came up with several more of his (and hers) and was willing to share them with me for the book. We also spent some time talking about the museum's history, how she became a photographer for the museum and many other things. The world needs more like her.
I am blown away by this -- and by the fact that I have a book in print containing photos taken by one of the greatest rail photographers of the age.
My condolences to his family, his friends and all who knew him.
Mr. Steinheimer may be gone in body, but his work will live on forever.
