Dick Steinheimer was indeed a worthy ambassador for both the hobby and the railroads. I am fortunate to have had a lengthy, informal conversation with Dick. It occurred while I was a volunteer at the Nevada State RR Museum. I was giving handcar rides to the visitors when Shirley Burman and Dick showed up. Shirley was discussing a future display of Women in Railroading with museum administrators. To kill time Dick joined me sitting on the handcar between visitors. We discussed everything from a new cat that had just joined their family to Jesus Garcia, a Mexican railroad hero who saved the town of Nacozari from a burning train of dynamite. Dick had never visited Nacozari, knew about it's railroad history and was enthusiastic about hearing my tales of past visits. I felt honored that he would take the time to visit with me and to be genuinely interested in what I had to say. A most gracious person who will be missed by all who had the pleasure of meeting him and enjoying his bountiful efforts in photographing and writing about the many aspects of railroading.
