It is my understanding that when Eisenhower proposed the Interstate Highway system, it was projected that 6% of the traffic would be commercial trucks. The amount of freight that would move from rail to truck was not calculated in this equation. Seems like the percentage of trucks on our roads now is closer to 30% (or more) on average...? Is it time to consider raising the gas tax to place more of the costs on the users...? Should Trucker Bob have to pay more too...? We certainly need to put more $$$ into our nations bridges now!!
