News reports (for what they're worth) said the bridge was under repair and that several lanes were closed. I wonder if the additional traffic (trucks in particular) caused an eccentric overloading of one or more of the structural members anc contributed to the collapse.
I know that in railroad bridge construction it is extremely important to have the stringers, piles and track structure concentric in order to evenly distribute the weight.
