I've often wondered about the RR's weird scheduling practices as well. There are other industries out there that operate 24/7, 365 who also have unpredictable work loads and schedules. How do they handle it? (I have no idea how--but someone out there must have figured this out by now). A friend of mine on Caltrain told me how the Gilroy schedule sometimes works out, and it is absolutely insane. I couldn't do it.
