Stockton is about a 1.5 hour drive, and has much more freight than anywhere closer. There just isn't too much freight in the Oakland/SF/San Jose area.

I would NOT recommend walking from the Amtrak depot in Stockton to the former tower area. Yes, in the daytime you 'probably' will be OK, but it is not a good area in a town with minimal police and a very high crime rate. Opinions may differ on this, but I have been railfanning in the area for 30+ years, but always from a car, and not around the tower and park any more. Stockton is not getting better. The tower area is also not very photogenic.

The BNSF South of Stocton is very accessable, as is the UP.
