I've shot photos in lots of urban areas and you can do that in Stockton, but walking through an area of gang activity known for a high crime rate, looking like an outsider (probably) with an expensive camera is bad advice. In a car, you can get out of the area if you are not comfortable, and get in, get a shot and move on.
Another factor is that Stockton is much warmer than the Bay Area in the Summer - often 100+, so doing that trip walking and sitting at the crossings means the need to carry water. I like to have a car with an A/C, but that's my preference.
We used tp hang out on RR property around the diamonds, but I have heard that is a No No now.
All that said, I shoot a lot in the area near Stockton - may do so Saturday if it's not too hot. It's worth the DRIVE!
Would a cab work between the ACE (SP) depor nd the Amtrak (ASTSF) depot? Haven't looked at cabs in Stockton.
