I disagree with those who don't think there's enough freight activity in the Bay Area. We have both the UP and BNSF. In Richmond there is the Richmond Pacific RR running all over town. Plus the NCR (or whatever it's called) at the Honda yard in west Richmond.
Freight activity is pretty consistent. Oakland in the port area has both UP and BNSF yards. There's always something happening there.
Hang out at Brennan's restaurant in Berkeley (former depot) and freight and passenger trains pass by on the UP Martinez Sub. As mentioned, Martinez (on UP) is a great place to hang out.
Lines seem busier than ever these days.
