As a long-time Bay Area resident and railfan,
I would strongly discourage the Stockton idea.
I agree with Craig Tambo. Please take what
he said about Stockton very seriously.

Roseville? Check the Capitol
schedule here
The Capitol Corridor trains are scheduled
mostly for commuters, and I know of only
one place to eat, a very good place, according to
Yelp: the Roundhouse Deli, which is 1/3 mile
west of the Roseville Amtrak station. This
marvellous place is just across the street from
the UP's Diesel Shop, and -- when we were
last there 10 years ago -- the walls were covered
with photos of trains (including my beloved
SP 2472!). Here is the Yelp page
about this great place, and here is their
website. The only thing about the Roseville
station is -- I don't know if you would get hassled
if you hang out there. I would think that you
would get questioned if you try to hang out
around the Diesel Shop area, as there is no
sidewalk on the Diesel Shop side of the street.
That is really too bad, as it is a very interesting
area for railfans because of the freight action,
and because the rotaries and flangers and spreaders
are stored just east of the Diesel Shop area.

I would encourage you to go to Martinez. Great
place to watch trains, safe, and close to good
restaurants, and excellent Amtrak connections.
And I don't think you will get hassled hanging
out there, but my experience is at least 10
years out of date.

Oh -- if you have time, and like pizza -- the most
awesome pizza you will ever eat is Zachary's,
which has 3 locations. You could take BART
to the Rockridge station, get off, and walk one
block. Yummm!! IF you have a car, you could
eat at any of the 3 -- they all serve superb pizza.
Here is their wsebsite.

To sum up, Lokomo: there really is not that
much freight action in the SF Bay Area, within
a 100-mile radius, except for Stockton.
You will have to content yourself with watching
passenger trains -- which there are a lot of
around most of the SF Bay Area, except the
North Bay counties.

Anyone want to comment on what I have said?
Please feel free.
