And I'm tired of a culture which singles out public transit and Amtrak, but ignores the subsidies for roads, highways & bridges, particularly in rural areas. The problem is that public transit and Amtrak funding is very visible whereas subsidies for automobile usage is more diffuse.
The National Safety Council estimates that the annual costs of injuries and deaths dues to automobile accidents is $800 billion. While some of these costs are privately born, much is also covered by the public. Unlike the funding for public transit you whine about, expenses associated with automobile accidents do not move one person, one mile.
