Commuter lines and lines like the California Capitol's and the NEC are essential for this country. HOWEVER, Long distance trains in this country serve no purpose beyond a thing for railfans to watch, an alternative mode of travel for elder people who can afford to take a week to get somewhere, and a potential vacation for people where the ride is the vacation in and of itself. That we spend tons of money on highways is irrelevant. Highways are essential for this nation's commerce, random long distant trains are not. Long distance trains are a total waste of taxpayers money, regardless of all other uses of taxpayer's money, which may or may not be a waste but are a separate argument. And sorry, but the whole "its hard on my legs" and "I'm old so can't fly" argument ain't gonna cut it. If you can't travel long distances, then don't. It's not the taxpayers job to give your old-ass convenient access to the whole country anymore than it would be to provide a separate highways system for old people who can't drive. Long distance trains should have been killed long ago. Get over it you blatantly biased railfans....
