Yep. Aside from all other considerations, the sheer size of this country is a key factor in the rise of air travel, which had already destroyed long distance passenger rail almost 20 years before it was deregulated and became affordable by most people. I take trains everywhere in Europe; in Europe they make sense because average travel distances are rail-appropriate. I love passengers trains personally but as a US national priority they make no sense at all.
