The shoofly around Tunnel 5, built after the 1952 Tehachapi earthquake while the tunnel was being rebuilt, is still there, however it has a steeper grade and a 15 degree curve. Not much chance of double - tracking this area. The other areas mentioned are quite do-able; in fact the Espee had planned on daylighting Tunnels 1/2, 1, and 2 back in the 1920's before they spent too much money of the Great Salt Lake causeway. I wonder why Espee never daylighted Tunnel 10 between Walong and Marcel; it's so short and double - track in this area would be a big help.
