From driving Edison Hwy/Bena Rd, I always wondered why the SP just didn't head northeast at the point where the track heads down into the Caliente Creek bed (near Sandpoint, Sandcut?)and start climbing from there. Lots of fill and/or bridges but would have cut down the ruling grade at least at the lower elevations.
