Another way to increase speed on the Tehachapi Pass
line would be for Amtrak to invest in new equipment with
(I know -- no money for THAT right now -- but maybe later?)
with the 1990s tilt-train technology. I remember seeing the
X2000 back in 1993 (almost 20 years ago!) and reading
in the brochure that the X2000's train shaved 1-1/2 hours
off of a 4-1/2-hour trip by having active tilting technology!
X2000 can go around curves 30-40% faster than non-tilting
trains. Too bad no one in the US bought this kind of equipment.
