Re: Changes on the UP in NE Oregon/E Washington

Don't know about any work windows on the Washy (Ayer Sub), but there have been a number of delay factors affecting UP Hinkle-Spokane-Eastport during the past 24 hours or so. Friday evening, there was a report of falling rock somewhere way south of Spokane. Also, a northbound Richardson empty stopped at Coeur d'Alene Jct., ID, for close to an hour so they could wye the trailing unit and hand it off further north to a southbound with a bad leader. I believe that southbound is the train that currently is parked on the Coeur d'Alene Branch. This morning, a train had to stop at Cheney, WA, due to a fuel leak. And right now on Saturday evening, there have been at least two southbounds into Spokane in the last few hours, another just by the detector north of CdA Jct., and MSKHK is asking BNSF for permission onto their track at Napa Street and the answer (not surprisingly) is "it'll be a bit."

The Washy is notorious for being dead for hours, then a flurry of action, then dead again, etc. On a good day, you can catch a dozen or so trains in daylight (more if you count BNSF's Low Line and GRNW's Ayer Turn). On a bad day, you can shoot a train or two in the morning, then hear the DS tell some maintainers they have the track til sundown.

As for BNSF losing some of its business to UP, here's a short preview of that development from a couple months ago:

The QPTLCHC illustrating that piece (shown at Providence, WA) was packed with JB Hunt boxes and even had a few Fedex trailers on the rear. But UPS brown was noticeably absent. Equally interesting, it was powered by three fairly worn-out units (instead of the usual four good ones for a Z), and one of them was a very weathered UP (!).

Glad to hear UP east of Hinkle is apparently running better, and busier. My son was in the Blue Mtns for several days this past winter, and UP was sending quite a few WBs up the hill with not enough power. At least two or three stalls each day, helper being called, what little traffic there was being delayed even further.
