I wasn't aware they were using a pair of Geeps much less running a Hinkle - La Grande local. There any kind of regular day/time on this? I did see one or two SD40-2 on some kind of local or work train a while back in Pendleton. La Grande has had an SD60 assigned for a while presumably as protect and local power. Before the last recession/depression hit, the Huntington local would often run to Baker City (pair of SD40-2) and switch the a resaw mill and lumber reload, occasional propane for west of town (Wing station?) then on to La grande usually with a good cut out of the cement plant near Durkee (except in winter). If I recall, they often laid over in La Grande and returned the next day. All the traffic in Baker is gone and an extra board crew would often run propane out of La Grande with the SD60 there. Baker and La Grande still have wyes. The Huntington local usually only runs as far as Durkee with a pair of SD60/SD60M now, but I did see a short train of cement the other day with 3 SDs which looked like the Huntington local headed for La Grande. The HKGR used to handle the La Grande and Huntington setouts. It was always fun if a car you were waiting for was out of block. Sometimes we were lucky and they set out the cars with the Huntingtons and the local brought them back to La Grande. More than once the cars went all the way to Green River before being turned back to Hinkle for another try for La Grande.
