Wow, a very impressive and in depth report on the probable causes and effects of climate change.
What the situation effectively boils down to, though, is this: the planet has evolved the human race. The human race has learned to use various resources the planet provides to their benefit. The utilization of these resources has side effects, such as carbon and other emissions.
The race has been successful and as it has grown it has fractured itself into separate competing groups, each of which works toward the betterment and empowerment of itself and the "defeat" of competing groups. The size of each of these competing groups ebbs and flows but humanity has NEVER worked together for its entire common good - only for the good of each of its own groups. This is how humanity behaves. It is a natural function of the organism.
So now the success of the race is starting to have adverse effects. How can the whole of humanity suddenly be made to alter it's natural behavior and start working together for the good of ALL humans? Scientists and humanists obviously think that we should be able to overcome our natural instincts by the sheer power intellect, but it will never happen. Human groups will ALWAYS take advantage of other groups if they see an opportunity to do so. The mentality of "the common good can wait until we've got ours" will always prevail. If what it's going to take to "save the planet" is the whole of humanity, or at least major but competing parts of it, to alter their behavior and work together for the good of the planet then the planet is doomed. Or more accurately, humanity is ultimately doomed. Not a happy thought but really, REALLY, how else can it go?
