SMART is not light rail. It is "commuter rail" powered
by heavy DMUs.
As to the connections between SMART and NCRA, the connections
are on both sides. NCRA and SMART are connected but good. By
statute, operations, economics, environmental impacts, and now
politics.
Opponents have recognized these connections as a way to bring
down the SMART sales tax measure. So have proponents. That's why
proponents are denying the connections between SMART and freight.
As to what happens in November, it's anyone's guess. Much will be determined by factors
that are beyond either campaign's control. Turn-out (which helps
SMART) and the economy (which hurts SMART) are likely to have
more effect than all the campaign tactics.
