Unfortunately in Northern California people do keep getting killed with alarming regularity, especially along the busy SF-San Jose Caltrain line. Some are suicides, some accidental. The faster the trains, the more the trains, the worse the problem. The only solution I think is to fence off the right of way completely and keep people out of there. Sadly many have been killed just taking a short cut across the tracks. For sure if and when the high speed rail project goes thru here this corridor will have to be cordoned off.
I think my underlying problem with SMART is having two operators, as with Amtrak and the freight railroads. I am fast coming to the conclusion that it is a waste to put any money into SMART unless they own the line.
Perhaps this will help to explain my discontent. SMART would stand as at the very least the sixth separate transit bureaucracy in funky little old Sonoma County: at least 3 municipal bus operations, the county bus system, Golden Gate Transit and now SMART. I am probably missing some. Each has its own fiefdom.
