Here's the poop on SMART's light vs. heavy DMU.
There is no plan to put in light DMU unless they can
get approval from the FRA to run them on the same
track as freight. And, if they did use light DMU,
they would have to take out the midday train to maintain
the time separation required for light DMU use.
They are floating the light DMU balloons so that supporters
think it's possible/probable/likely to happen.
It sells better than heavy DMU.
Just more hype by the bureaucrats whose future depends
on passing the tax.
By the way, if they lose the ballot measure, what do
you think will happen to the General Manager?
