Terminating the high-speed rail route in San Jose instead of San Francisco is the best idea that I have heard. Yes, San Jose is a larger city than San Francisco. The Cal Train is already up-graded to a high level and could continue to serve very well between S.J. and S.F. San Francisco should pay for whatever costly station they want in their city along with the approach route and tracks to it.
I am wondering if the Cal Train electrification will be compatible with the Calif. high-speed rail electrification. According to the "Old Pole Burner," great care is needed in selecting an electrification on the peninsula that will be compatible with the already-existing B.A.R.T. electrification in order to avoid electrical problems. I hope he will say something about this. How about it, Mike?
